Dead Sea Scrolls Road Trip! May 5
Posted by: | CommentsWEDNESDAY NIGHT MAY 5th you can join us as we travel to the Science Museum on a ROAD TRIP!
In 1947, a shepherd stumbled upon the Dead Sea Scrolls in caves below the ancient settlement of Qumran. Since then, archaeologists have pieced together more than 100,000 scroll fragments into more than 900 documents—from biblical manuscripts and commentary to religious legal writings that tell us about the world 2,000 years ago.
The Dead Sea Scrolls: Words That Changed the World, a special exhibition at the Science Museum of Minnesota from March 12 through October 24, 2010, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see actual scrolls from Qumran, and to discover their cultural, scientific and religious impact.
At the conclusion of The Dead Sea Scrolls exhibition, you’ll see twenty-eight new pages from The Saint John’s Bible, history’s newest hand-written, illustrated Bible. A work of art, it uses ancient techniques to illuminate our world today presenting themes, images and technology of the 21st century.
It’s a story that’s beyond words, beyond time and beyond our imaginations
At the conclusion of The Dead Sea Scrolls exhibition, which showcases the oldest-known hand-scribed record of the Hebrew Bible, you’ll see The Saint John’s Bible, which represents history’s newest hand-written illustrated Bible. A work of art that illuminates the world today, it’s the first complete, handwritten and illuminated Bible to be commissioned in 500 years. It uses ancient techniques—it’s written on calf-skin vellum with quills, natural handmade inks, hand-ground pigments and gold leaf—to present themes, images and technology of the 21st century. The result is a project that has monumental artistic and spiritual significance for our time. And it originated right here in Minnesota.
Cost is $25.00 Space is very limited – sign up Early to make sure you get a ticket!
